Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area runs along roughly 150 mi (240 km) of the Arkansas River. Designated by Colorado State Parks in 1989, the area is enjoyed by a variety of people. Visitors can indulge in a range of activities, including camping, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, fishing, rafting and sightseeing.
The Pike National Forest encompasses nearly three million acres and features a variety of flora and fauna, ranging from prairies to artic tundra. Featuring 14,000-foot mountain peaks, this national forest is home to nine wilderness areas, numerous Scenic Byways and a myriad of recreational opportunities.
San Isabel National Forest encompasses more than one-million acres of diverse lands, from jagged mountain peaks to grasslands. A range of activities are supported, including camping, hiking, fishing, mountaineering and rock climbing. Inside, find well-known peaks of Sawatch Range, the Spanish Peak and Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Colorado's highest mountain, Mt. Elbert, is also found in San Isabel.
